What’s the difference between Midwestern and Canadian accents?

Ok I know this sounds narrow and ignorant but I honestly can’t tell Midwestern and Canadian accents apart. Like if I were to listen to someone from Chicago or Wisconsin or Minnesota or the UP or Ontario, I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart. And given Canada’s a big country there’s probably several different accents there alone, right? Help!

UP and Ontario accents are very similar. But a Newfoundland accent sounds more like Scottish than Midwestern. And Chicago, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are different accents.

I think it’s easier to detect the differences in the accents around you. For me, all Southern accents sound the same, since I was born and raised in Pennsylvania. But I can usually tell what area in Pennsylvania someone is from due to their accent.
