and apart for chicago, dallas, houston all major cities ar situated on either coast. why? can a city of mid west region realistically become a major national and international city on the lines of nyc or la? what are the major obstacles stopping it? and what can be done to overcome them?
My theory is because of culture. I live in Houston and this place totally lacks the culture compared to the two coastal cities I’ve lived in – Miami, and San Francisco. Yes, we have a ton of mexicans, and I appreciate their culture, but there’s very little diversity other than that. Also, after living in Miami, where you have latinos from all over latin america, living in mexico city #2 is a bit of a let down. I think the main reason is proximity to the ocean, and history of being port cities. You’re obviously going to get a lot more of an international flavor in port cities than you would with the cities in the middle of the country that no one cares about. Yes Houston is near the gulf of mexico, but the water and beaches are dirty from all the river silt, and why go there when you could stop anywhere on the east coast or west coast?
